Australian cotton showcased in Brisbane fashion boutique

Australian cotton showcased in the Brisbane Fashion Month Pop Up Boutique in Brisbane City this month. Designer Emma Bond is inspired by the Australian cotton industry “I love that our growers are family farmers, people that love their land and are active in their communities. You put all your energy into growing it right, so I ensure my garments are designed and sewn well too. Cotton is a natural fit in the circular economy. My new Australian cotton bridal collection is made from biologically circular inputs with zero hidden plastics.”

“Growing up on the land & now working in design, I have lived experience across the cotton supply chain. I want to collaborate with others in the cotton industry to share their stories & promote our local fibre for the high quality product it is, and for its sustainability and social impact.

My educational work Wrapped in Cotton engages youth, challenging students to design with Australian cotton. It is important that we recognise customers are citizens, people that make choices. Education can be used to rehumanise our industry so that people value the resources and skills uilised to make their clothes.  What we buy says what we value, and ultimately creates the market. We can all use our purchasing power to speak our values.”

New garments in the Madi and Pip collection made from Australian cotton are completely biologically circular- free of any hidden plastics. To enable this, cotton and silk threads have been used to construct, and silk organza to stabilise (instead of interfacing which is made of synthetic fibres). Thought has also been given to fasteners used, including the use of wooden buttons and fresh water pearl fasteners.
